Burn Permits

Do I need a burn permit?

Effective Jan 1, 2023 the following rules have been adopted for the Strasburg Fire jurisdiction:

Recreational Fire = No Permit Required

A recreational fire is defined as a permanent fire pit, burn barrel, portable fire place or any fire less than 3 ft x 3ft in area.  Please burn responsibly and make sure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving unattended.

Small Burn Piles = Permit Required

Burn piles may be:

  • Less than 8 ft x 8 ft area and stacked less than 8 ft tall with fuels
  • ONLY "Class A" Materials (wood, paper, yard waste, natural cloth products)
  • 50 ft or more away from any structure
  • Clear space around the fire site with no vegetation
  • No flammable fuels overhead the burn site (example: trees)

Burns may only be approved when there are no burn restrictions or red flag warnings for the county you reside in.  You must also have a means of extinguishing the fire on site and it must be attended by an adult 18 years of older at all times.  In person burn inspections by fire department staff are REQUIRED prior to obtaining a burn permit.

Large Burn Piles = Banned

Fires which are larger than the 8ft x 8ft x 8ft maximum are banned and will be extinguished immediately.

How do I get a burn inspection & permit?

Burn permits are required and ALWAYS FREE!  Please call between 8AM - 6PM no more than 24 hours before your planned burn to obtain a a burn site inspection and permit.  Here's how:

You will need to provide this information:

  • Name
  • Address of burn
  • Duration of burn (example: 2-6pm)
  • Phone number you may be reached at during the burn
  • Type of material and quantity you plan to burn
  • Do you have a water source to fully extinguish the fire? Y/N

Why do I need a burn permit?

Weather conditions are always shifting on the plains, while the county burn ban designation provides general guidance, Strasburg Fire provides specific guidance on your area to keep your community safe. Both Adams and Arapahoe county governments require permits for all planned fires.
